Reporting on Gaza; Where’s the Objectivity? – News from Jerusalem

Watching the evening news is a very trying time for supporters of Israel. We hear of a high number of civilian casualties in Gaza. We as Christians must mourn for the innocent. We must also denounce the terrorists who declare that the civilians “stand their ground” and stay in their villages and homes as the IDF tries to stop the launching of rockets against civilian targets in Israel. Certainly no one with any credibility will question that the rockets were fired first and that they continue to fall. However, has any reporter, anchor or media agency asked for the source of the casualty lists? Has traditional journalistic objectivity been replaced by prejudiced subjectivity of corporate owners of most mainstream media?

The Brave Child Martyrs of Hamas – News from Jerusalem

“We went into Shuja’iya, to discover and destroy the Hamas’ terrorist tunnels. We discovered there an entire underground city, with multi-shaft, wide tunnels, with Wi-Fi & air-conditioning systems, concrete walls, and stocked to the ceiling with weapons and explosives. Some of the tunnels are so wide, that they can ride back and forwards on Vespa-type scooters. And then came the worst! The Hamas ‘fighters’ started sending towards us 13- and 14-year-old Palestinian children, running at us, wearing explosive-laden suicide-bomber belts!! Those children were death-trapped, and became human bombs, by the community’s adults!! We were trained to fight adult soldiers or any other skilled adults, enabling us to defend our families and countrymen. But this??

We Are All at War – News from Jerusalem

The main topic of conversation in Israel today is of course the war being waged against the forces of darkness manifest in the Islamic terror group of Hamas. I was just now speaking with friends and we all agreed that this war feels different than the conflicts we experienced before. When we analyzed the ‘why’ of this feeling we concluded that it was because of how completely twisted this conflict has become in the eyes of the world.

Judea: the Hard Duty Post for the Romans – News from Jerusalem

How often when you are reading the Bible, or historical fiction do you get the impression that Jerusalem and Judea were backwaters. Historical fiction, and often movies that feature Roman main characters, often have lines like “Oh, assigned to Judea Marcus? I pity you”. This wasn’t because poor Marcus would be without a decent bath or dining for his term of duty in Judea. No, he would have to deal with the Jews. The other provinces had various tribes (Britain’s were countless), gods (what’s another holiday or idol), or foul weather (Britain again). At least those provinces shook when Roman hob-nailed boots marched. The Jews had standards and kept to them. That made it a hard duty post for any centurion or especially Procurator. Ask Pontius Pilatus.

To All the Sometimes Weary Warriors – News from Jerusalem

My mom called me yesterday, slightly concerned. “What on earth is going on over there?” were the first words out of her mouth. Which is a rather odd question, coming from my mom. Because she has a pretty good idea of what is going on over here. This is where her daughter is. She makes it her business to know. Except it wasn’t really a question. It was a call for back-up, a request for reinforcements so to speak.

A Short History of Hamas – News from Jerusalem

Hamas, meaning “enthusiasm” is an acronym of Harakat al-muqwamah al-Islamiyyah or the Islamic Resistance Movement. Hamas was founded during the First Intifada (1987-1991), which was the first uprising of the Palestinian people against Israel post 1967, after the war that led to the transfer of the West Bank and the Gaza strip to Israeli control. However, it must be made clear that when Israel captured these territories they were not independent Palestinian States. The West Bank had been annexed by Jordan after the 1948 war and all residents there were granted Jordanian citizenship.

The 15 Second Apocalypse – News from Jerusalem

The 15 second apocalypse: what Christians can learn from Israel’s living with air raid sirens. Just imagine, you are sitting in church listening to a well-researched and delivered sermon; or you are at the grocery store, picking up a week’ s supply of food and suddenly a loud ear piercing wail shatters the air. Everyone runs for the nearest bomb shelter. There are 15 to perhaps 45 seconds to find the nearest one, crowd in and get ready for the mindless, murderous missiles. This is a fact of life in today’s Israel.

Gaza War “Protective Edge” Day 13 – News from Jerusalem

God clearly blesses Israel. In the Gaza Strip upwards of over 100,000 have been forced from their homes in an effort to find safe shelter. The United Nations humanitarian aid is running out and inadvertently civilians continue to suffer the effects of Israel’s efforts to seek out and destroy all elements of the Hamas military infrastructure including the hidden missile launchers and rocket storage depots. Information has been reported that the Hamas terrorist organization has been using UN schools to store its rockets.

Israel Enters Gaza for all Jews – News from Jerusalem

The IDF started a ground campaign into Gaza with a very clear mission and a Nation behind them. These words were broadcast to Israeli Soldiers as they were entering Gaza by their commander. "Your nation is behind you the terrorists from Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad are ahead of you. I have trust in you and believe in your capabilities. Go ahead. Good luck. Over and out." It is true that the vast majority of Israelis are behind this move and no one is in doubt that it is a necessary operation to restore peace to the civilians of Israel. After many long and traumatic years of Israelis having to live with thousands of missiles being launched at them this move is long overdue.

Is There an “Original Judaism” – News from Jerusalem

Part 1: Ancient Sects of Judaism There has been much debate in Israel and within the Jewish community abroad over the Orthodox monopoly of Judaism in the State. Secular Israelis who support this Orthodox domination often joke that “the synagogue they do not attend is the Orthodox one,” essentially declaring that in their eyes, Orthodoxy is the only legitimate way to practice Judaism, if one were to choose to participate. This belief has led the Reform and Conservative Jewish communities to hold an unrecognized status in Israel, since they are not part of “original Judaism,” a belief some hold for the status of Orthodox Judaism. The irony for those who maintain such a stance is that there have always been different denominations within Judaism. Orthodox Judaism itself was born out of the destruction of the Temple in 70 CE and it has evolved and changed over the past 2,000 years. Different ways of practicing Judaism is in fact a deeply entrenched tradition within the Jewish religi

Israel and the Rise of the Caliphate – News from Jerusalem

Does Israel have the best experience to deal with the rise of the Caliphate? Do Western Governments really understand how to deal with the Middle East? Much of the news is coming from the Middle East. Israel is under attack from Hamas terrorists and the “new” combined state of Syria and Iraq and possibly parts of Lebanon are being overrun by Shiite sect terrorists who are ruled and under a shadowy figure who has called himself the Caliph. Westerners cannot tell Shiite from Sunnite, Wahhabis from anyone.

Peace in Israel? (Part 4) – News from Jerusalem

Israel—apartheid state? The recent peace talks between the Palestinians and Israel failed in part because of the refusal on the part of the Palestinian Authority to recognize Israel as a Jewish state. The idea of a Jewish state goes back to 19th Century Zionism and the writings and efforts of Theodore Herzl. It is enshrined in the Balfour Declaration and stated in the UN resolution that formed Israel as a Jewish state where the resolution called for the formation of a “Jewish State” and an “Arab State” in the former British Mandate territory. The Palestinian claim that identification of Israel as a Jewish state would endanger the rights of the many Israeli Arabs living there is baseless in that the government of Israel protects the rights of all of its citizens regardless of race or religion.

How Christians Can Fight Rising Anti-Semitism – News from Jerusalem

Anti-Semitism is increasing all over the world, and not all of it is aimed at Israel. Neo-Nazi movements in places like Greece and Ukraine threaten Jews just because they are Jewish. If we are truly Christians, we must have zero-tolerance for Ant-Semitism in any size, shape or form. Silence is approval. The question is how do we respond as the Messiah wants? The world of social media offers us opportunities and no excuses.

Peace in Israel? Part 3 – News from Jerusalem

Against the backdrop of failed peace talks, as the US government and Secretary of State John Kerry still hold out hope to bring the two parties back to the peace table, the Palestinian Israeli conflict has come to a broil. The bodies of the three abducted yeshiva (Jewish seminary) students Gil-Ad Shaer (16), Eyal Yifrah (19) and dual American-Israeli citizen Naftali Fraenkel (16) have been laid to rest a week ago but the finding of their bodies followed by the funeral, generated riots by belligerent extremist Jewish groups throughout the capital, leading to extended property damage and now possibly the violent death of another innocent youth, this time an Arab, Muhammed Abu Khdeir also 16, who lived in East Jerusalem. His burned body was discovered in the Jerusalem National Forest shortly after he went missing.

Between the Straits – News from Jerusalem

This morning, as Hamas’s rockets continued to rain down on Israel despite a cease-fire being in place, observant Jews started a day-long fast to remember a tragic three-week period in Jewish history. The period starts and finishes with two particularly ominous days: the 17th of Tammuz (fourth month in the Biblical calendar) and then, three weeks later, the 9th of Av (fifth month in the Biblical calendar). Believe me, there is no exaggeration on this one. Bad, bad, bad things happened for the Jews on these days. Let’s take a look…

Gaza: A Just War – News from Jerusalem

In 2005, Israel withdrew from the settlements next to the Gaza border. It was one of the saddest things I have ever seen. But it was done with the hope that it would issue in a true season of peace on that southern border—a promise actually made by PA leader Mahmoud Abbas at that time. Since then, however, more than 11,800 rockets have been fired on Israel. Every single one of those rockets was sent by the terror organizations with the hope that they would kill as many innocent Israeli citizens as possible. That is a huge number of rocket attacks! The reason the world has not heard about the extent of the hostility is because the rockets did not succeed in killing innocent Israeli citizens.

How to Use Social Media to Support Israel – News from Jerusalem

It used to be that newspapers, then radio then television were the most effective ways to get the news. Sending a letter to the editor of a newspaper or a national magazine were serious experiences. Your name appeared in print to be attached to an opinion, a statement of support or criticism. Many an hour of reading, rewriting, piles of dictionaries and a thesaurus or two went into the task becoming a public citizen. Today, in a nano-second you can like, friend or tweet a small message and go viral around the globe. Social media has become a medium for change and a vital tool in communications. It is an extremely important tool to be put to use in supporting Israel. There are many ways to use social media but they should be used ethically and with Biblical standards in place at all times.

He Who Watches Over Israel – News from Jerusalem

The Israeli team didn’t make it to the Soccer World Cup. My friend, Saul, explains, “We’re just not good enough.” “But what is your national sport then?” I ask (secretly hoping to learn about an ancient sport steeped in tradition and passed along from fathers to sons for the past 6 000 odd years). But his answer dashes that hope. “High-tech. Israel’s national sport is high-tech.” I think about that for a moment. “That kind of sucks then, doesn’t it? There is no High-tech Word Cup for you guys to win.” Saul sighs in exasperation, “If there was a High-tech Word Cup, Israel would probably be the only country making it through the qualifying matches.”

Are the Palestinians the True Jews? – News from Jerusalem

Meeting in Munich last February with Chief Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat, the Israeli delegation was informed that the Palestinians would not recognize Israel as a Jewish state, the one demand made by Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu during the recent peace negotiations. But if that wasn’t enough, the delegation was stunned when Erekat claimed that his family has a greater claim to the land than do the Jews. “I am the proud son of the Canaanites who were there 5,500 years before Joshua bin Nun burned down the town of Jericho!” said Erekat adding, “This is my narrative!” In fact, Erekat is part of a family of Arabs who migrated to the area from Saudi Arabia. He was born in Abu Dis, a village near Jerusalem.

Too close to home: Israel civilians under fire. – News from Jerusalem

This article is personal, please indulge me. One of the most searing and traumatic experiences any family can undergo is a missing child. The heartbreak is replaced by the cold numb feelings when the news comes that the body has been found. Recently three Israeli families received the news that their kidnapped sons were murdered by Hamas (Semitic translation: “violence”). Later, in retaliation a Palestinian boy was murdered by thugs. Another family grieves. But here are some very important differences between the two news stories that the mainstream media has missed (as if we didn’t expect them to).

Is This the Promised Peace? – News from Jerusalem

As “Operation Protective Edge” moves toward full out war, the US and Europe continue to put pressure on Israel to hold back its ground invasion of the Gaza Strip, hoping to somehow bring the Palestinians and Israelis back to the peace table. Reconciliation in Chaos – News from Jerusalem

It was way back in 1975 when I came to know the Lord, having made the amazing discovery that ‘Christianity” was not a religion, but a real relationship and friendship with the Lord Himself; that Jesus (Yeshua) was actually the Messiah that God had promised to the Jewish people so many centuries ago; and that as a Jewish person, I did not become part of another ‘religion’, because it was all Jewish anyway! Then I learned the equally astonishing news that God actually loved the Jewish people; that it was a miracle of His grace alone that we had survived as a people at all after hundreds of years of dispersion across the face of the globe; and that it was by His hand that we had become a nation again after 2000 years. In 1976, at His direction, I moved to Israel and in 1977 He called me to serve Him full time. In the years that followed, I had many adventures in His service and experienced His faithfulness and the greatness of His love for people countless times and in countless ways.

More War, More Accusations. What Happened? – News from Jerusalem

Israelis are not dying in great numbers, so they must be the aggressors. This is the logic spewed out by many news organizations, even on my beloved MSNBC this past Wednesday. Imagine if we used such logic in WWII and accused the US of using excessive force because American civilian causalities were almost non-existent compared to the German and Japanese civilian death counts. Because the war was not fought on American soil, sparing American cities from destruction and minimizing the American loss of life, was America the aggressor in WWII? Or was America forced to respond to the aggression of irrational leaders holding countries and populations hostage in unprovoked aggression? So, again, because the Israeli death count doesn’t match that of the people of Gaza, is Israel the aggressor in this current conflict?

Israel's Security Cabinet Meeting - Ready to Hit Hamas Harder – News from Jerusalem

"We are in the third day of Operation Protective Edge. While the campaign has gone as planned further stages yet await us. We have struck hard at Hamas and the terrorists and as long as the campaign continues we will strike at them harder. My First Air-Raid Siren – News from Jerusalem

I’ve never heard an air-raid siren before On Tuesday night at about 22:00 the air-raid siren started wailing here in Jerusalem. I’ve never heard an air-raid siren in my life. The Roar of Young Lions – News from Jerusalem

I took a little trip down south Gaza way with this guy today. He was handing out much needed donated medical/tactical gear to the local security teams of various small kibbutzim down there. The residents are mostly farmers. All the amazing people I met today were born and raised down there. They sure were appreciative of the help. They had broad shoulders, but heavy burdens. Just doing their jobs, protecting their farms and families- and the rest of us, too. Some of them were obviously suffering from serious stress and lack of sleep from the past few days of rocket fire in particular, but they were gracious hosts, and showed me (us) things i never would have been able to see otherwise and won't soon forget.

The Other Side of the Story – News from Jerusalem

Just after 1am last night, the IDF Spokesperson unit took to Twitter to announce the start of Operation Protective Edge in Gaza against Hamas “in order to stop the terror Israel’s citizens face on a daily basis.” Over the past three weeks, more than 200 rockets have slammed into the south of Israel. And Israel responded to those rockets with airstrikes on Gaza. Yesterday things took a turn for the worse. Between 20:00 and 20:10 last night, a barrage of 30 rockets rained down on Israel. Let that sink in for a moment. Thirty rockets in 10 minutes… That brings the total rocket count for Monday to 80.

A Shining Light for Peace – News from Jerusalem

We have reached an ‘historic moment’ in the story of Israel and Palestine. You could even say a ‘turning point’. Or even a ‘pivotal moment’. Unfortunately these are only slogans and words that mean nothing unless brave people act. This historical opportunity is not being led by the grand powers who decide where our destiny lies but by two simple families whose hearts are torn asunder. The families of murdered Israeli teen Naftali Fraenkel and murdered Palestinian boy Mohammed Abu Khdeir are doing something deep and inspiring.

The IDF: How Charities look out for Lone Soldiers – News from Jerusalem

There is no army or defense organization quite like the IDF, Israel Defense Forces. If General Robert E. Lee thought he was outnumbered, he never had to fight like the IDF has had to from 1948 right up to this morning. The strength of the IDF is in the boots on the ground (and on the joystick of F16’s and F-15’s and the wheel of its ships above and below the water). With few exceptions allowed, all Israelis, Sabras and the immigrants are required to serve their country by defending their soil. This is nation-building, bonding and relationship establishing all in one. There are approximately 5,700 soldiers in the IDF who fit the lone soldier profile. These are recent immigrants, sons and daughters of immigrants who have themselves recently arrived and volunteers from religious groups such as Haredim whose families object to their service.

Mourning “Our Boys” – News from Jerusalem

Last night at about 18:30 the news broke here: the three kidnapped Israeli teenagers had been found: murdered and buried under a pile of rocks near the city of Hebron. Eyal Yifrach (19), Gil-ad Shaar (16) and Naftali Fraenkel (16) were abducted on 12 June while making their way home from school for the weekend.
